Austrian composer Alban Berg, a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg, attended the premiere of Georg Büchners play ‘’Woyzeck’’ on May 5, 1914 in Vienna and immediately found the inspiration to compose his opera Wozzeck. His plans were interrupted due to military service in WWI and the opera was finally finished in 1921. The world premiere took place at the Berlin State Opera December 14, 1925, conducted by Erich Kleiber. The composition was deeply influenced by Berg’s experience during the war, and is considered an expressionist masterpiece of the 20th century.
One of the most powerful and revolutionary works of the 20th century, we are thrilled to present filmmaker Francois Roussillon’s production of Wozzeck from the Dutch National Opera in a staging by Krzysztof Warlikowski and described by Gramophone’s Peter Quantrill as ‘among the most beautifully played and sung accounts on record and film’.
